Consumers and Merchants - who has to protect the data?
Carl Banzhof in his blog post on PCI and data protection talks about the growing awareness by both consumers and merchants of the risk of loss of consumer data. Like Carl, I believe that we are moving in the right direction, but are far from the final destination. 99% of the world is honest, and while this is good for day to day life, it can hurt you when you believe the rest of the world is going to be like you. Often times, consumers give out their data with little thought to the impact if something goes wrong - with almost no thought to if the merchant is doing everything they can to protect the data.
Awareness and legislation will move us in the right direction. The final power though will rest in the hands of the consumers and the dollars they spend. If people begin to only work with those merchants that provide the utmost in protection for their data, then companies will change. The market is all powerful in its voting power - which is why continued consumer awareness is so potent.
